Benedikt Gröndal was a poet, literary scholar and naturalist.
He was born in Eyvindarstaðir on Álftanes in 1826, the son of Sveinbjarn Egilsson, later rector, and Helga Benediktsdóttir Gröndal. He graduated from Bessastaskóli in 1846 and studied natural history and literature at the University of Copenhagen, completing a master's degree in ancient Nordic literature in 1863. He taught at Reykjavík School from 1852-1854 but went to Louvain in Belgium in 1857 in the company of Etienne Djunkovsky, a Catholic missionary. He held various writing and teaching positions, most recently at the Lærði School from 1874-1883. He died in Reykjavík on 2 August 1907.
Benedikt published a number of works, poems, rhymes, articles, translations and plays. Gröndal's first work to be published was Brev til Islænderne om en munk i Norge, 1849. This was followed by - Drápa um Örvar-Odd, 1851 and translations of stories from Thousand and One Nights in 1852.
