Kristján Karlsson was born on January 26, 1922, in Eyvík, Tjörnes, in South Þingeyjarsýsla. After graduating from Akureyri High School in 1942, he studied English literature at the University of Berkeley in California, graduating with a BA in 1945. He went to New York for graduate studies at Columbia University, graduating with an MA in comparative literature in 1947.


Kristján served on the board of the Icelandic Literary Society in 1979 and the Icelandic Friends of the Nation in 1984-1985. He was also a member of the jury of the Björn Jónsson Memorial Fund in 1985. He edited the magazine Islandica from 1948-1952, which is published by Cornell University in Íþoka, Andvar in 1984, and Skírn, together with Sigurður Líndal, from 1983-1986. Kristján was also co-editor of Nýs Helgafell from 1956-59.


Kristján has written poetry, short stories and articles as well as translations. He has also edited a number of books. He was responsible for various publications before publishing his poetry collection Kvæði in 1976. He received the Davidspennann in 1991 for his poetry collection Kvæði 90 and the Icelandic Broadcasting Corporation Writers' Fund award a year later.
