Lárus was the son of Jón Thorarensen Bjarnarson, poet and county magistrate, and Jakobína Jónsdóttir Halldórsson, pastor in Stórholt. He graduated from the Presbyterian School in 1905 and then moved in the fall to Ísafjörður where he took a position as a teacher at the elementary school. In 1910 he accepted the call of his countrymen and was ordained a priest in North Dakota in the United States. Early in 1912 his health became so poor that he had to take a break from his duties and seek recovery in a sanatorium. However, he did not recover there. He then wanted to go home to Iceland "even though there was no other way than to carry the bones there." He set off for home early in the summer of 1912, but after a three-day journey Lárus died and his body was thrown into the sea.
