Tweet. Poem by Steingerður Guðmundsdóttir.
Steingerður Guðmundsdóttir was born in Ísafjörður on October 12, 1912. Her parents were Guðmundur Guðmundsson, who was best known as Guðmundur the school poet, and his wife, Ólína Þorsteinsdóttir. Steingerður was always unmarried and childless. When Steingerður was in her first year, she moved with her parents to Reykjavík and has lived there ever since. Steingerður worked various general jobs in her younger years, took private lessons in Icelandic and foreign languages, studied sculpture with Einar Jónsson in 1931-32 and attended Lárus Pálsson's acting school in 1940-41. She pursued advanced studies in acting in New York in 1943-46, the first year at The American Academy of Dramatic Art, and the next two years at the private school of the famous Russian director Theodor Komissarjevsky. She also attended the ballet and gesture school of the Russian ballet master Mihail Mordkin. Then she introduced herself to acting in Sweden in the fall of 1946 and Britain in the fall of 1947. During her studies, Steingerður made monodrama, the solo, her specialty and held an independent solo show in Iðnó when she returned from her studies in the spring of 1947. Her stage roles were as follows: Anna in The Word by Kaj Munk at the Reykjavík Theatre Company in 1942-43, Mary the Virgin in The Golden Gate by Davíð Stefánsson at the LR in 1948-49 and Celía in As You Like It by William Shakespeare at the National Theatre in 1952. In the years 1955-60 she worked as a drama critic; first at Frjálsi þjóð, and later and for the longest time at the Sunnudagsblaðið of the Alþýðublaðis. She wrote numerous solos and performed them herself on the radio for thirty years.
