The town's oldest house construction is discussed, including the Innréttingen houses, the first commercial buildings, and how house construction changed with the abolition of the monopoly.
It tells how the town's buildings changed with the lifting of trade restrictions and the emergence of new trade unions. It discusses the changes brought about by new building materials and describes the conflict between functionalism and the old styles in the 1930s.
The architectural history of each individual plot in the city center is traced. The main architectural trends in Northern Europe around and after the turn of the last century are described and their influence on the buildings in the city center is pointed out.
This story is told in words and with numerous new and old photographs, as well as drawings of houses and household items.
