The Italian Alberto Denti di Piranjo went as a young doctor to the Italian colonies in North Africa. He settled in Tripoli, and established hospitals, both along the coast and inland. Gradually, he was given other duties in addition to his medical work; he organized intelligence services among the tribes of the border regions, and was increasingly entrusted with major government positions.
