Lárus was the son of Páll Jónsson of Arnardrang and Halldóra Gísladóttir, born on January 30, 1842. At a young age he became interested in medicine, and that interest ran in the family, including his ancestor, Rev. Jón Steingrímsson, a fire priest. Lárus did not have the opportunity to obtain a medical education, but he soon became acquainted with homeopathy, not least when he studied with Rev. Arnljótur Ólafsson of Bægisá.
Lárus' healings were widely known in Ströndin, and people sought him out from far and wide. He was often visited by patients who had psychological problems.
