The Way Home. Poem by Þóra Jónsdóttir.
Þóra Jónsdóttir was born on January 17, 1925 in Bessastaðir in Álftanes, but moved with her family to Laxamýr in Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla when she was a child and grew up there. She studied at the People's School in Laugar in Reykjadalur from 1940 to 1942 and later at the Akureyri High School, where she completed her matriculation examination in 1948. Þóra taught at Flensborg School in Hafnarfjörður from the winter of 1948 to 1949, but then went to Copenhagen, where she read literature at Hafnarfjörður University from 1949 to 1952. After returning to Iceland, Þóra attended the Icelandic Teachers' College and graduated from there in 1968. Þóra worked at the Reykjavík City Library from 1975 to 1982.

Þóra's first book of poetry, Leit að tjaldstæði, was published in 1973, and since then she has published a number of books of poetry as well as translations of poetry. In addition, two books by Þóra have been published with short poetic, biographical prose texts. A collection of poems from Þóra's first seven books of poetry was published by the publishing house Sölka in the fall of 2005 under the title Landið í brýsinu.
