Christian Matras was born in Viðareði in 1900. He went to Havnar at a young age to attend real school and then to Denmark to attend a student school. In 1928 he became a master in Norse linguistics. Later he became a doctor and professor. He moved back to the Faroe Islands in 1965 and was the leader of the Faroe Islands Department at the Center for Knowledge.
Christian Matras was active on many occasions. In addition to being an innovative writer and an excellent translator, he was a linguist, which laid a good foundation for Faroese dictionary work. Kristjan á Brekkumørk published many informative scientific publications.
