Ólafur Kr. Þórðarson was born in Hagar, Barðastrond, in August 1918, the son of Þórðar Ólafsson, of Innri-Múli, Barðastrond, and Steinunn Bjargar Ólafsdóttir. Ólafur's wife was Helga Vigfúsdóttir from Hrísnes, Barðastrond.
Ólafur grew up on Barðaströnd, he studied at the District School in Reykjanes and graduated from the Agricultural School in Hólar in 1942. He worked as a farmhand and a part-time teacher in Barðaströnd from 1943-46 and from 1954 to 1960, and then lived in Hrísnes. He was a school principal in Tálknafjörður and a teacher in Patreksfjörður, but then moved with his family to Reykjavík in 1961. He then taught in Ytri-Njarðvík, Vogaskóli and finally in Álftamýrarskóli until his retirement. For the longest time he taught young people, mainly in Icelandic. Leitað í sandinn is Ólafur Kr. Þórðarson's only book of poetry.
