A reading book for the Icelandic people compiled by Þórarinn Böðvarsson in Görður on Álftanes was usually called the People's Book. The book is little known today, but it had a huge impact when it was published and it has been said that it was "read to the letter". The People's Book was intended to educate the public on various issues, as the author says in his preface that it is "the purpose of such books ... that the most important thing that is considered worthy of knowledge is collected in one place". The popularity of the book became such that it has been described as "the universal school of the Icelandic people in the last quarter of the 19th century". Previously, Icelanders had mainly read P. Hjort's Danske Börneven, but now they had access to a reading book in Icelandic, in which respect the publication of the book was invaluable.
The book is divided into five chapters, each of which is then divided into numerous subsections. The chapters are always short, so the reading will not be long. The content of the book comes from all directions: About the earth and its inhabitants, the animal kingdom, the plant kingdom, the mineral kingdom, chemistry, chronology and human organs, human history, Icelandic history and political philosophy, fables, short stories and advice, proverbs and poems, and health and religion, to name a few. The book is also decorated with pictures, especially where the animal kingdom is discussed.
