Eggert Stefánsson (December 1, 1890 – December 29, 1962) was an Icelandic tenor. He went abroad to study singing at the age of twenty, and studied in Denmark, Sweden and not least in Italy. He achieved some fame outside Iceland and sang all over the world, but he lived in Italy for most of his singing studies there in the 1930s and had an Italian wife named Lelja. They lived in the industrial town of Schio, in northern Italy. He was the brother of the doctor and composer Sigvald Kaldalón (1881-1946) and first sang his songs on a record in 1919. Eggert also wrote several books, including four volumes entitled "Lífið og ég" and "Bergmál Itáliá". He was a great cosmopolitan and in many ways different from his brother Sigvald, who was considered the most modest of all men. But that was always dear to them. Eggert died in his hometown of Schio but is buried in Florence, a city of culture and art, where his Italian wife Lelja also rests. They had no children. Among Eggert's close friends was Halldór Laxness, writer and Nobel Prize winner.
