The Tree of Life. A novel by Böðvar Guðmundsson.
"The Winds' Home" dealt with the situation back home during the hard times around 1880 when everything was, to say the least, in a cold place here. It's absolutely incredible to see reports from that time. It was winter all year round. The second part of that book then deals with the settlement of New Iceland itself. The Tree of Life then deals with the people who either migrated west with their parents at a young age or were born there. As well as telling the story of these people who went west, I have been keen to examine the relationship between those who went and those who remained. There was a lot of families being split up; some of the children went with their parents while others were placed in foster care with friends and relatives. And these people knew they would never be seen again because very few made the journey across the sea except once in those years."
