The War of Life. The life of Margrét Róbertsdóttir from Hitler's Third Reich to Þorlákshofn. Compiled and recorded by Eiríkur Jónsson.
When Hitler's forces invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, Margarete Ida Martha Marten was lying in her parents' orchard in Glansee, Pomerania, Germany. She was unaware of the invasion, being only 7 years old.
Hitler commanded his troops in the immediate vicinity of Margarete's home, but after the defeat in Africa and the hopeless German advance eastward, the Russians came. Margarete ended up in a Russian prison camp at the age of 13, her home was destroyed, her family was forcibly moved to all corners, and the Poles were ordered to Pomerania.
Margarete became one of the victims of the new political order that emerged in Europe after World War II and which lasted for 45 years in the shadow of the Cold War between the superpowers. She was closer to death than life from slavery and prostitution long after the war ended in Europe and eventually drifted all the way to Iceland, took the name Margrét Róbertsdóttir and settled in Þorlákshöfn.
