Ívar Björnsson was born in Steðja in Flókadalur in July 1919. Ívar graduated from Akureyri High School in 1946. He studied at the University of Iceland and completed his cand. mag. degree in Icelandic studies in the spring of 1952. He taught Icelandic, first at the secondary school in Vestmannaeyjar and later in Keflavík and at Vogaskóli in Reykjavík. For the longest time, Ívar was an Icelandic teacher at the Icelandic Business School, for 25 years.
