Days Gone. A brief biography. Jón St. Melstaður tells the story.
Jón St. Melstaður was a Hunvetningur by birth, and was raised there until adulthood. He did not receive any financial support in his early life. But he was given courage and endurance, optimism and courage as a cradle gift, and these qualities have proven to be loyal companions for him throughout his long life. Almost twenty years old, Jón sailed to Norway. He stayed there for several years and worked on farms there while also studying. This journey and his stay abroad must have been instructive for him, and undoubtedly cultivated his great spirit for energy and improvement in farming later. After returning home, Jón took on various jobs, but shortly after the turn of the century he confirmed his decision and married a native Icelandic woman, Albína Pétursdóttir, from Svertingsstaðir in the Kaupangursveit. The young couple started farming there, but in 1912 they bought Hallgilsstaðir in the Hörgársveit. And Jón was ever after known as Hallgilsstaðir.
