Looking back. Reminiscences. Matthías Þórðarson from Móum tells the story. Reykjavík. Flash 1946-1947.

Matthías Þórðarson was born in 1872 in Móur, Kjalarnes, and died in Copenhagen on August 13, 1959. He was an Icelandic shipowner, writer, and editor. He was a pioneer in the fishing industry in the South Peninsula and built boats from Sandgerði.
In 1897 he moved to Seyðisfjörður with his wife Sigríður Guðmundsdóttir. They had a son, Ástþór, in 1899. There in Seyðisfjörður, Matthías participated in the founding of the fishing company Garðafélagins, led by the Norwegian JM Hansen. The company went bankrupt due to excessive spending and went bankrupt in 1901. In his autobiography, Matthías is very critical of his business partners. He moved to Reykjavík after Garðafélagins went bankrupt.

It so happened that Lauritzen, the Danish consul, had founded the Iceland-Faroe Islands Company and had recently had 20 boats built for herring fishing in the North Sea. Matthías had worked for the Danish Coast Guard, among other things, and Lauritzen got him to choose a place in Iceland for a port for the ships. Matthías chose Sandgerði after some consideration. There was a major development of port facilities, warehouses, residential buildings, fish and salt houses. 14 boats arrived there from Denmark to fish. However, this experiment was not entirely successful and Lauritzen sold the fishing business to the entrepreneur Pétur Thorsteinsson. Pétur then sold the fishing business to Matthías again. In 1913, Matthías then sold his fishing business from Sandgerði to Loftur Loftsson and Þórður Asmundsson.

Matthías founded the magazine Ægi in 1905 and was its first editor. Along with others, he founded the Icelandic Fishing Association in 1911. In 1920, Matthías bought the land in Keflavík and the houses that were owned by HP Duus. In 1930, he published the book Síldarsaga Íslands. He published his autobiography in two volumes in 1946-7.
