Poems by Jón Þorsteinsson from Arnarvatn. Introduction by Andrés Björnsson.

Jón Þorsteinsson, a poet and farmer on Arnarvatn, was born on Grænavatn and his parents were Þorsteinn Jónsson, a priest in Ystafell in Köldukinn, and his wife, Guðbjörg Aradóttir. Jón lost his father when he was eight years old. The widow continued to live in Ystafell, but when Jón was an adult, she moved to Skútustaðir in the Mývatnsveit region. Jón married Halldóra Metúsalemsdóttir, a farmer on Arnarvatn, and lived there thereafter. Jón may have pursued an education, but it is believed that he had no intention of "specializing in studies for a career", but he is said to have read widely in fiction and aesthetics. Jón Þorsteinsson's book of poetry was published in 1933. Jón was popular in his community, performing both poetry and humorous poetry at gatherings. His lighter verses have become long-lived in oral tradition in the area.
