Kristín MJ Björnson was born in Gauksmýri, V- Húnavatnssýsla, on April 16, 1901. Kristín went to the United States at the end of World War I to study nursing and was first under the care of her paternal sisters, Kristín and Margrét Benedictsson, who was a well-known women's rights activist and published the magazine Freyja. Margrét was invited to the 1930 Alþingi festival by the Icelandic public in the West. Kristín spent her formative years in the United States and was greatly influenced by the ideas of the early post-war years about the brotherhood of nations, human rights, especially women's rights, and abstinence from alcohol and tobacco. She graduated from Ripley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1924.
