Poems and essays by Jóhann Jónsson. Halldór Laxness writes an introduction "about the author".
Jóhann Jónsson was born in September 1896 in Staðastaður on Snæfellsnes. He grew up in Ólafsvík and graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1920, went to Leipzig in 1921 and never returned to Iceland.
As a child, Jóhann contracted tuberculosis in one of his legs, and had a clubfoot and walked with a limp. He later contracted pulmonary tuberculosis and died on September 1, 1932, at the age of only 35.
Jóhann's poem Söknuður is considered to have a unique position among Jóhann's writings, and it is because of that poem that Jóhann is considered a pioneer in Icelandic poetry.
Where have the days of your life lost their color,
and the poems that flow through your blood from dream to dream,
Where did those who cared for you, oh child, fall prey to the weather?
carried with the wonder of unity
Your own inexhaustible well in your chest, where?
