Marteinn was born in Siglunes, the son of the couple Gísli Marteinsson and Guðný Gestsdóttir. He was the eldest of four brothers. Marteinn grew up mostly in Siglunes, but soon after graduating from high school he began working on the farms in the countryside until he established his own household. In 1928 he married Guðrún Elísa Þórðardóttir from Fit á Barðastrond and they began farming on part of Siglunes that same year. He founded a fishing company with his brothers Gísli and Gest, and this partnership lasted until 1938. In the spring of 1941 Marteinn went rowing on a trill from Patreksfjörður and that same year he moved his family to Patreksfjörður and planned to settle there permanently. Then in the autumn he attacked the trawler Baldur from Bíldudalur, who was fishing in the ice and sailing with the catch to Britain. On Christmas 1938, Marteinn returned from a cruise, shortly before Christmas, laden with gifts for his arrival and the children. This was their last Christmas together. Marteinn died that Christmas, having just turned 33 years old.
