A selection of poems by Jóhannes from Kötlar.
The poet Jóhannes úr Kötlum lived through a period of great upheaval in history and literature, and if one poet were to be chosen as a representative of the 20th century in Iceland, it would almost inevitably be him. No Icelandic poet more accurately reflects the development of poetry in this country than this versatile and prolific author, who brought the nation so many unique and influential poems.
Jóhannes úr Kötlum began his career as a neo-romantic poet, but during the depression years he was at the forefront of a group of radical poets. In the turmoil of the war and post-war years, he experimented with free style and renewed his form with artistry and originality. Finally, he caught the international radical wave in the 1960s and was at a new peak of his career when he passed away.
Jóhannes's poetry selection includes poems from all of his books for adults, both original and translated, which give a broad picture of the poet's complex poetic world. Silja Aðalsteinsdóttir was in charge of the publication and wrote an introduction.
