Jón Þorleifsson from Hvammur in Dálar, last pastor at Ólafsvöllur in Skeiðun, was among the most promising poets of his time when he died at the age of only 34 in 1860. His works include poetry and the novel Út hversdagslífinu , which, after Jón Thoroddsen's Pilti og stúlla, is the oldest attempt at writing poetry in Icelandic in a modern style. Jón also wrote two folktales for Jón Árnason, one of which is Tungustapi, one of the foremost fairy tales in Icelandic literature. Ljóð og sagnamál presents a selection of Jón Þorleifsson's works, including his novel. At the beginning of the book is a biography of the author by the poet Steingrím Thorsteinsson. (Cover text).
