Friðgeir Grímsson was born in Reykjavík in 1909. His parents were Bryndís Jónsdóttir, a housewife, and Grímur Ásgrímsson, a laborer and stonemason. Friðgeir's first wife was Eyrún Guðmundsdóttir (1908-1936). Friðgeir's second wife was Guðrún Soffía Gísladóttir (1912-2003). Friðgeir grew up in Reykjavík and was sent to various jobs in the countryside and at sea at an early age. He began studying motor engineering and later graduated in mechanical engineering in 1931. He was a mechanical engineer from the Icelandic School of Engineering. In 1938, Friðgeir began studying engineering in Mittweida in Germany and graduated there in 1940. Friðgeir was one of those who returned home on the Petsámo expedition and he met Guðrún Soffía on that trip. Upon his return, he taught at the Reykjavík Vocational School and the Icelandic Mechanical Engineering School and became an inspector at the State Factory and Machinery Inspectorate, later the State Safety Inspectorate and now the Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate. Its director 1970-1979.
