About Jóhann Magnús Bjarnason the following is said on the website http://servefir.ruv.is/vesturfarar/personur.html

Jóhann Magnús Bjarnason was born at Meðalnes in Fellar, North Múlasýsla. He moved west with his parents at the age of 9. They first lived in Nova Scotia and then in Winnipeg, where he completed his teacher's qualification. He was a children's teacher in New Iceland for most of his life, but also lived elsewhere in Canada. He had great ambitions for writing, followed literary discussions and innovations in that field, and wrote a lot. He was sensitive and impressive, often childishly simple in his writing. His diligence in writing and publishing was of great significance for the beginning of West Icelandic literature. At twenty, he published the first collection of poems in the West (1887) with poems by himself and two other poets, Kristin Stefánsson (1856-1916) and Sigurður Jón Jóhannesson (1850-1923). He was also the first to publish prose poetry in a book, Sögur og kvæði 1892. That poetry was not considered substantial, but the poetry in Ljóðmælð 1898 was better, he often manages to describe the conditions of poor and humble immigrants quite well. He corresponded with Stephan G. Stephansson, they exchanged opinions on literature and Stephan completely dominated him. Although Stephan highly praised Magnúr's Ljóðmælð from 1898 in a quality and fair review, they received a mixed reception and Jóhann Magnús turned his back on poetry and leaned towards writing stories, both novels and short stories, which enjoyed great popularity. Apart from short novels by Gunnstein Eyjólfsson and Snæ Snæland (a pseudonym for Kristján Ásgeir Benediktsson), the novel Eiríkur Hansson I-III (1899-1903) by Jóhann Magnús is the first western Icelandic novel, and undoubtedly the first that can be considered significant. The story is a coming-of-age story of a boy who moved west, an enjoyable read. Jóhann Magnús's storytelling flourished in Brasilíuföran (1905-1908) and Í Rauðárdalun (1942, first published as a serial in the magazine Syrpa 1913-1922). Both are romantic adventure and detective stories, the former dealing with the Brasilíuföran, the latter taking place mostly in Winnipeg. Jóhann Magnús also published the "boy's story" Karl litla (1935), which is an adventure, and the short story collections Vornætur á Elgsheiðar (1910) and Haustkvöld við hafið (1928). He also wrote several plays that have not been printed. Jóhann Magnús's best-known short story is undoubtedly "Íslenskt heljarmenni" - about a brave Icelandic man who lived on an island off the east coast of Canada, a heroic story of an Icelander who surpassed all other brave men.
