Gísli was born on November 22, 1818. He was the son of Sigurður Thorarensen, a priest in Hraungerði, and his wife, Guðrún Vigfúsdóttir, sister of Bjarni Thorarensen. Gísli graduated from Bessastaðaskóli in 1840. He then studied theology at Hafnarháskóli but did not complete his degree. He also studied archaeology and poetry. In Copenhagen, he joined the Fjölnism group and greatly admired Jónas Hallgrímsson, as is evident in his memorial poem about the poet that appeared in Fjölnir in 1847.*
Gísli returned home to Iceland in 1847 and taught at the Latin School in Reykjavík for the winter. He then became a priest in Sólheimaþing in Skaftafellssýsla until 1874 and lived at Felli in Mýrdal. Shortly after arriving in Mýrdal, Gísli married Ingibjörg, daughter of county magistrate Páll Melsted. Gísli was given the pastoral call to Stokkseyr and Kaldaðarness in Árnessýsla in 1873 and moved the following year to Ásgautsstaðir in Flói. He died on Christmas Day of the same year. He had then arrived at church and was about to celebrate Christmas mass. Gísli Thórarensen's Poems were printed in Reykjavík in 1885 at the expense of Einar Þórðarson. It is not mentioned who was in charge of the publication and wrote the foreword, but it is said that it was Jón Ólafsson.
