Ólafur Stefánsson was born on Christmas Eve at Kleifarstöðir in the Gufudalssveit region in 1904. He fell ill with tuberculosis at a young age and died in the spring of 1930. In his memoirs about Ólafur, which appear here as an introduction, Vilhjálmur S. tells of his acquaintance with Ólafur, his ideals and their acquaintance. Some of his poems may have appeared in magazines such as Kyndli, but Ljóðmælin is Ólafur's only book.
