Sigurjón was born and raised in Reykjavik. He completed the traditional compulsory education of the time. Sigurjón was a messenger boy in his teens, was a department manager at KRON for a while, and then operated his own grocery stores, which he was often known for, Valencia on Njálsgata and then the Örnólf store, on the corner of Njálsgata and Snorrabraut. For the last seven years of his career, from 1980, Sigurjón worked at the Ministry of Finance. Sigurður played football for the Fram championship team for a while and won the Icelandic championship with the team. He was one of the founders
Icelandic Coin Collectors' Association and its treasurer for a time.
