Shades of Light. Collection of Ásgrímur Jónsson. Text by Júlíana Gottskálksdóttir. Editor Bera Nordal. Translation by Aðalsteinn Ingólfsson.
Painter Ásgrímur Jónsson (1876-1958) is one of the main pioneers of modern Icelandic art. Icelandic landscapes became his main subject matter, along with interpretations of Icelandic folklore.
Ásgrímur bequeathed all of his works to the Icelandic state, and his museum was opened to the public in 1960 and merged with the National Gallery of Iceland in 1988.
This excellent book of artworks about his collection is divided into three main sections: an introduction to the artist and his collection, a richly illustrated discussion of the main categories of paintings in the collection, and a complete catalogue of the works. The book is adorned with over 200 illustrations. (Cover text).
