The Cop Who Laughed. A novel about a crime. By Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. Translated by Ólafur Jónsson.

He stopped the car, turned up his coat collar, and stepped out into the pouring rain. He saw a large red bus across the sidewalk, its front end crushed and part of it smashed through a high wire mesh fence across the sidewalk. He also saw a black Plymouth with white mud flaps and the word Police in white letters across the door. The police car had its hazard lights on, and in the center of the beam of light stood two uniformed policemen with guns in their hands. They were both surprisingly pale. One had spit on his leather jacket and was now wiping himself with a wet handkerchief, looking rather embarrassed.
"What's going on?" asked Gunvald Larsson.
- There... there are a lot of dead people in the car, said another police officer.
- Yes, said the other, lots of dead people. And lots of bullet casings.
- It's a life goal with one.
- And one is from the police.
