Magna Carta. By JC Holt. Professor of History University of Reading.
Magna Carta is an English law code originally issued in 1215. The name is derived from Latin and means "the great charter" (literally "the great sheet"). Magna Carta is significant because it had a profound impact on the long history of governance that led to the modern legal environment based on constitutional rules and rights.

Magna Carta was created as a result of a dispute between the Pope, the King of England, and the English barons regarding the rights of the king. Magna Carta limited the king's rights and obliged him to obey certain laws and regulations. Magna Carta, which is actually a collection of various legal documents, was updated more than once during the Middle Ages, but by the early 19th century most of its provisions had been repealed. Nevertheless, it still has an impact today, as ideas from Magna Carta influenced the creation of the American Constitution.
