The beginning of Magnus the Blind
King Sigurður's son Magnus was made king in Oslo over all the land, as the people had sworn to King Sigurður. Many men were then immediately taken prisoner, and so were many men.
Magnus was the most handsome man in Norway at that time. He was a man of great temper and cruelty, he was a man of great ability, but his father's popularity made him the most popular friend. He was a great drinker, greedy for money, unkind and unkind.
Harald Gilli was a man of easygoing, cheerful, playful, humble, quick-wittedness so that he did not spare his friends, resourceful so that he let others decide with him everything they wanted. All of this brought him popularity and praise. Many rulers at that time meant him no less than Magnus.
Harald was then in Tunsberg when he heard of the death of his brother King Sigurður. He then immediately had a meeting with his friends and they decided to hold a Haugaþing there in the town. At that þing Harald was made king over half the country. They were then called the forced riders because he had sworn off his father's inheritance. Harald then took a court and made men of the land. Soon he had an army no less numerous than King Magnus. Then men went between them and it stood for seven nights. But because Magnus had a much smaller army, he saw no other option than to divide the kingdom with Harald. It was then divided so that each of them should have half the kingdom that King Sigurður had had, but King Magnus had the ships and tableware and treasures and all the movable property that King Sigurður had had, and yet he enjoyed his share less, and yet they ruled the country in peace for a while and yet each thought very much of himself.
King Harald had a son by Thora, named Sigurd. Thora was the daughter of Guttorm the Greybeard. King Harald married Ingirid, the daughter of Rögnvald. He was the son of King Ingi, Steinkelsson.
King Magnus married Kristina, the daughter of Lord Canute, sister of King Valdimar of Denmark. Magnus did not like her and sent her back south to Denmark, and things got worse for him from then on. He was greatly disliked by her relatives.
