This book deals with understanding and explaining the nature of man and culture from the perspective of anthropology. The author traces the development of the main ideas about man from the time of the Enlightenment to the present day and places the ideas of anthropology in the context of the general history of ideas in the social sciences and biological sciences. The author takes his own path in interpreting classic scholarly works in the field and draws equally on German, French and Anglo-Saxon primary sources. The subject matter is diverse, from magic, religion and sorcery to secular rationalism, from the simple customs of primitive man to the complex modern national organization.
Haraldur Ólafsson studied philosophy at the Universities of Strasbourg and Paris. He also completed degrees in religious studies and cultural and biological anthropology from the Universities of Stockholm and Uppsala. He also completed a Fil.lic. degree from Stockholm University. He has taught anthropology, religious studies and theories in the social sciences at the University of Iceland since 1973, first in the Social Sciences program and in the Faculty of Social Sciences since its founding.
