Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was originally named Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski and was born in the Russian part of Poland, the son of landowners who were exiled by the Russian government, where they died while he was still a child. At the age of seventeen he went to sea and for the next fifteen years he sailed all the oceans of the world. He became a British citizen and began writing stories in English, most of which were based on his experiences as a seafarer and the colonial ambitions of European countries.
