The goal of publishing this collection of articles is to create a dialogue on this topic and at the same time map, if only a fraction, of the manuscripts and literary works that have emerged from the depths from the Middle Ages to our time.
When looking at Icelandic literary and cultural history, one can see how many of the most significant works of Icelandic literature have their roots in the Westfjords and Strandi. The aim of the publication of the collection of articles Culture at the Outer Sea is to create a dialogue on this topic and at the same time map, if only a fraction, of the manuscripts and literary works that have risen from the depths from the Middle Ages to our time. The publication is the final part of the project Lesið í sköpinarkraft Vestfjarði (2017–2021) and is partly based on talks given in Hrafnseyri (summer 2017) and two seminars in Ísafjörður, (2018 in the Edinburgh House and 2021 in the Museum House). The genesis of the project lies in the summer course of the Department of Icelandic at the University of Manitoba in the Westfjords (2007-2015) and the department's collaboration on this subject with the University Centre of the Westfjords. The project has been supported by the Jón Sigurðsson Professorship at the University of Iceland, which Guðmundur Hálfdanarson holds, and he wrote the book's foreword. The authors of the articles are scholars and writers from Iceland, Canada, and Denmark, and the book's editors are Birna Bjarnadóttir, a research specialist at the Faculty of Languages and Cultures at the University of Iceland, and Ingi Björn Guðnason, a literary scholar and curator at Hrafnseyri.
