The brothers from Tindi near Steingrímsfjörður in Strandasýsla, Níels (b. 1870) and Halldór (b. 1871) Jónsson were self-educated commoners, driven by an unstoppable compulsion to document their lives and surroundings. Here are their diaries, private letters and other personal writings, used to gain insight into the existence of Icelandic commoners in the decades around the turn of the century 1900, when society was taking its first steps into modernity. In particular, insight is given to how they desired and acquired education, expressed love and responded to tragic events. Personal sources by other Icelanders are also considered and the issues are discussed in light of foreign academic literature. The method of microhistory , which the author calls a monologue in Icelandic, is used here, and this is why the book is an innovation in Icelandic historical research. (Cover text).
