The Middle Ages in the Shadow of Svarfaðardalur. By Árni Daníel Júlíusson.
This article discusses the history of Svarfaðardalur from settlement until the 16th century. The valley is particularly rich in archaeological remains and other sources from ancient times, and these are used here to provide a glimpse into the past. It is somewhat surprising that the social structure initially seems to have been characterized by equality and distribution of property, but at the beginning of the written era, increasing inequality and the power struggles of chiefs left their mark on society, and this was followed by warfare and violence.
The manors of Velli and Urðir are discussed, as are the churchmen and secular chiefs who lived there, but also the cottages and seals, farmers, workers and the poor. The country's customs, vegetation and farming in the Middle Ages are described, and how this society was affected by the Black Death are told.
The book begins with Kristján Eldjárn's draft of a book on the medieval history of Svarfdæla, which he published during his presidency. Historian Árni Daníel Júlíusson took up the thread and uses the latest research to examine and analyze human life in Svarfaðardalur in the Middle Ages. The book is richly illustrated.
