A great leader. Ólafur Stefánsson Stephensen, the chief magistrate and his ideas. By Jón Sigurðsson.
Ólafur Stefánsson Stephensen (1731-1812) achieved the highest honors in Iceland, the first Icelander in later centuries.
It can be argued that Ólafur was one of the last guardians of ancient land rights in the old royalist style, of opportunities for the common people to make a decent living in the country and at the same time the special rights of the Icelandic nobility before the ideas of national liberation of the 19th century took shape and spread here.
Ólafur Stefánsson Stephenssen's wisdom and his steadfastness in difficult times have helped to bind and protect the soil from which it was later harvested. (Cover text).
