Guðmundur Eyjólfsson Geirdal was born at Brekka in the Gufudalssveit region in 1885. His parents were Eyjólfur Bóndi in Múli in Gilsfjörður Bjarnason and María Bjarnadóttir in Kveinagrjót. Guðmundur worked all the usual farm jobs and at sea during his youth, but attended teacher training college and graduated from it in 1912. From there he taught children and teenagers in the winters. He became a law clerk in Ísafjörður in 1916 and held that position for three years. County clerk in 1923-1925, and then harbor treasurer for many years. Guðmundur published four books of poetry and one adventure book for children.
Guðmundur was an avid music lover and many of his poems reflect this. Numerous songs have been composed to Guðmundur's poems, and Sigvald Kaldalón's song to the poem Þú eina hjartens yndið mitt is well known.
