Hulda was born on January 1, 1897 in Möðruvellir in Hörgárdalur, the daughter of the couple Stefán Stefánsson, a teacher, and Steinunn Frímannsdóttir. She completed her secondary education in Akureyri in 1912 and for the next few years she studied languages ​​and handicrafts there. She graduated from the Housewives' School in Vordingborg, Denmark, in 1916. Hulda then studied piano and musicology at the Matthisson Hansen School of Music in Copenhagen from 1916-1917 and continued her studies there from 1919-1921. She was a part-time teacher of Danish at the Akureyri Secondary School from 1921-1923 and also taught piano during these years. From 1932-1937 she was the principal of the women's school in Blönduós and again from 1953-1967. She was the principal of the Reykjavík Housewives' School from its founding in 1941 until 1953. In 1954 she was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon and the Grand Knight's Cross of the Order in 1969.


Hulda was the organist at Þingeyra Church for 15 years and was involved in the founding of the Sveinsstaðahrepp women's association in 1928 and was on its board for 15 years. She was also on the board of the Northern Women's Association and its chairwoman from 1960-1964.
