Commemorative letter on the 1000th anniversary of the construction of Iceland. Drawn up and written by Benedickt Gröndal.
This sketch was originally published in 1874 and was accompanied by a booklet with explanations of the picture. The booklet was in Icelandic, Danish, German and English.
In the National Will of August 12, 1874, something is said about the Commemorative Letter. It says, among other things, "This work of art is probably the only one that we Icelanders have created in memory of our national holiday, and we therefore consider it natural that people will buy it — even if it were never for any other reason. Because the edition has been many times smaller than it undoubtedly would have been sold. As for the picture itself, it is (whether people call it a work of art or not), an admirable work of art, as it was drawn by some talented man, whom we think was born in this country."
Then the author goes on to say a few words about various shortcomings that can be read from the drawing, and points out what could have been done better. After that, he says; "But despite this, this work is a work of art for which the author deserves thanks and honor, not least from the people of the country, to whom this work is especially intended and dedicated."
This edition of Gröndal's Memorial was printed around 1930. And will therefore be the third edition of the letter.
