Aðalsteinn Ingólfsson was born in 1948. He studied literature and art history in Scotland, England, Italy and Sweden. He completed a master's degree in English literature and language history from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and a master's degree in art history from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London.


He has worked as an art historian at the Reykjavík Art Museum (Kjarvalsstaði), the National Gallery of Iceland and other institutions, has been an art critic and cultural editor for DV, in addition to producing programs for radio and television. He has taught at the Icelandic School of Art and Crafts and the University of Iceland.


Aðalsteinn has written over thirty books about Icelandic artists, including Kjarval, Kristínu Jónsdóttir, Eirík Smith, Leif Breiðfjörður, Kristján Davíðsson, Sigurjón Ólafsson and Erró, as well as books about Faroese artists. He was briefly the director of the Icelandic Design Museum, but now works in research, writing and curatorship.
Unforgettable Land is Aðalsteinn's first book.
