Pictures of the Year 2008. The book is published in connection with the Icelandic Newspaper Photographers Association's exhibition of the best newspaper and magazine photographs of the year 2008.
The selection of the Icelandic Press Photographers' Association's jury for the best newspaper and magazine photographs of Iceland in 2008 takes into account the dramatic events that took place during the year. Events come to life in memory and in the photographs, from the clash between a truck driver and the police in April to the Icelandic handball team's triumphant return from the Beijing Olympics in August. The introduction to the book points out, however, that the banking collapse overshadows most other events of the year, and it says, among other things: "But above all, dramatic images of the fateful days in October and November when Iceland was proclaimed to the whole world as a bankrupt country with no hope of recovery. The protests, the clashes, the egg-throwing and the cries for a complete revolution in society. This story is recorded in a unique way by our leading documentary photographers. The photographs of the year 2008 are a unique monument to a historic time."
