Yearbook of the Icelandic Travel Association 2006. Mývatn band with pros and cons. By Jón Gauti Jónsson. Photographs by Jóhann Óli Hilmarsson and others.
The 2006 FÍ Annual covers the Mývatn region and its immediate surroundings, with all its advantages and disadvantages. The author, Jón Gauti Jónsson, a geographer, takes the reader on a journey through the region, from the Mývatn heathland down to the farms by the Laxá River, then on to Suðurbær before continuing along the lake to the south and east of it.
You stop at each farm and stop for a while, where tourists are offered food and accommodation, such as at Skútustaðir and in Reykjahlíð. Then you continue along the farms north of the lake and the circle closes at Laxá. After exploring the settlements, you head up to the heaths, mountains, lava and sands surrounding the entire countryside. Arrive at Krafla, graze in Búrfellshraun, look at Lúdent, head to Heilagsdalur, go through Fremrinámi, shoot at Sellönd and Suðurárbotni.
As the country is described, the sense of history and legends is kept, the identity of the people, their struggle for survival and their way of life are told, but also the nature is considered, which in many places in the country is as diverse as at Lake Mývatn: many birds, fish in the water, the fly is at once a wolf and a link in life. The Nature Research Center is introduced and scientists' knowledge about the biosphere is shared. Much is said about geology and how the appearance of the country has come about.
The author of the photos is Jóhann Óli Hilmarsson and the topographic map is made by Guðmundur Ó. Ingvarsson. The editor was Hjalti Kristgeirsson.
