The Gracious Lady from Ruzomberok, the memoirs of Laufey Einarsdóttir, is by Jónas Jónasson, writer and broadcaster.
Laufey was part of the famous Irish gymnastics team, which attracted a lot of attention in the Nordic countries, Britain and France in the 1930s. She was at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and on her way home from Copenhagen with Brúarfoss she met her future husband, the Czech Jan Jedlicka. In 1938 she went to Ruzomberok in Czechoslovakia and married him. World War II broke out and the Nazis invaded Laufey's new homeland. Europe was in flames. In September 1944, communist guerrillas took control of Ruzomberok and hundreds of people were arrested, including Jan. In May 1945, World War II ended and new masters came to power in Czechoslovakia. Laufey was arrested and sent to a concentration camp in Krupina.
