Svarfaðardalsfjöll. The mountain range around Svarfaðardalur has been hiked. Author and hiker is Bjarni E. Guðleifsson. Cartography by Hjalti Þórðarson.
Svarfaðardalur is considered by some to be the most beautiful inhabited valley in Iceland. To some extent, this is because the valley and its valleys are surrounded by particularly beautiful but also rugged mountains. This mountain range is little explored, but in 1995 four hiking companions decided to hike this entire mountain range. The district boundary around Svarfaðardalur is about 120 km long and has 75 peaks with an equal number of passes. It took the companions fifteen hiking days over eight years to complete the project. The book Svarfaðardalsfjöll describes the companions' journeys along watersheds and mountain peaks in words, but also with 138 photos and 18 maps. The names of most of the peaks are included in the photos and the passes are named on the maps.
The author of the book is the hiker and naturalist Bjarni E. Guðleifsson from Möðruvellir in Hörgárdalur. He has been hiking for years and has written a book about it, Á fjallatindum , which was a most thorough work in every respect. This book is no less, it is extremely enjoyable in every way and a must-have for those interested in hiking and Icelandic nature.
