Bragi was born in Reykjavík in 1900. His parents were Jón G. Sigurðsson, a town bailiff, and Guðrún Þorsteinsdóttir, a civil servant. He moved with his parents to Hoftún at the age of three and has lived there ever since. Bragi was a well-known farmer and used the pseudonym Refur bóndi. Bragi published numerous books of poetry as well as folk lore. These include Neistar in 1951, Knútur og hendingar I and II. Neistar nytt safn 1955. Knútur og hendingar III 1957. Neistar ívöllur 1960. Mislitar línur I 1966 and Mislitar línur II 1967.
