New York. Poem by Kristján Karlsson.
Kristján Karlsson was born on January 26, 1922, in Eyvík, Tjörnes, in South Þingeyjarsýsla. After graduating from Akureyri High School in 1942, he studied English literature at the University of Berkeley in California, graduating with a BA in 1945. He went to New York for graduate studies at Columbia University, graduating with an MA in comparative literature in 1947.
Kristján has written poetry, short stories and articles as well as translations. He has also edited a number of books. He was responsible for various publications before publishing his poetry collection Kvæði in 1976. He received the Davidspennann in 1991 for his poetry collection Kvæði 90 and the Icelandic Broadcasting Corporation Writers' Fund award a year later.
Henderson Antiques on Tenth Ave is on the verge of death.
I miss nothing but I know
What's going on here in the countryside?
Don't tell anyone if I did.
a gesture that is worth it,
that this is where Henderson fought
with a vanished junk shop secret hope
Now the houses are crumbling to the ground
with an open slot in each door
and empty tubes that go into purchase
during the war of independence, gunfire.
