The Gljúfrastein website says this about the book: "Young I Was (1976) is the third volume of Halldór Laxness' memoirs, which were published in the years 1975-80.
The others are In the Meadow (1975), The Seven Masters' Tale (1978) and The Year of Greece (1980). The story deals with Halldór Laxness' first time abroad in the summer of 1919. He then spent almost a year in Denmark and Sweden. Young I Was is a remarkable source on the atmosphere of the post-war years and tells the story of many of Halldór's well-known contemporaries, both Icelandic and foreign. The poet's self-image is, however, the most important aspect of the work: He studies the world impoverished but optimistic, determined to become a writer. He writes to live and lives to write. The interaction between the two main characters, the protagonist and the narrator, is particularly interesting. Halldór's art lies not least in making the protagonist completely unsuspecting of what awaits her. The young writer does not see what is likely to happen and maintains his innocence like any other fictional character. "However, the reader cannot help but be aware of where the young writer's life is heading. The author of the memoir is merciless towards the young author, repeatedly presenting him in an ironic light."
