The setting. A novel by Jón Mýrdal. The illustrations were drawn by Halldór Pétursson.
The novel that appears here has never been printed, but the same author has published the stories Mannamunur and Kvennamunur, both of which have become very popular. The story Niðursettunirninn has the same characteristics as them, a variety of events and descriptions of characters, a light style in natural, popular language, and a sensitivity to the humorous aspects of people and issues. This story is among the longer rural stories that exist from the last century, and fills the category of the few but well-known novels from the first period of Icelandic fiction. The story is printed here from the author's original, which is preserved in the National Library of Iceland. (Cover text).
